Modern battery storage
Modern battery storage usually consists of stand-alone units or low voltage containers. These units are connected to the existing power system via transformers and a cable connection. These systems have been extensively tested by manufacturers for (fire) safety and meet strict standards.
Many companies have invested lavishly in wind and solar power and sell some of their excess production on the grid at low injection rates. At times of low production, they are forced to purchase electricity at expensive purchase rates. The current energy crisis has widened this price gap.
Temporarily storing renewable energy
Storage systems such as batteries can temporarily store renewable energy so that it can be taken advantage of at other times. Surplus production can be used to partially absorb morning peaks or nighttime consumption. The deployment of a battery system is site-specific and the feasibility must be studied per site. Direct balancing function
Battery storage can also be connected directly to the electricity grid. They then perform a direct balancing function on behalf of Elia. In this case, the system is charged by the electricity grid and discharged to ensure grid stability or to help mitigate imbalance.
